(8 Sep 2005) SHOTLIST 1. British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arriving for joint news conference 2. Reporters 3. Reflection of reporters sitting in hall seen on the chandelier 4. SOUNDBITE (English) Tony Blair, British Prime Minister: "We should not compromise with it (terrorism). And neither incidentally do I think it is sensible for us to say that it derives from our failure to understand the Muslim world. The vast majority of Muslims also abhor this terrorism. The people who were killed for example in Egypt were predominantly Muslims, who died in the terrorist attacks. A majority of those people dying in Afghanistan or Iraq are Muslims." 5. SOUNDBITE (English) Manmohan Singh, Indian Prime Minister: "The struggle against terrorism has to be a multi-faceted struggle where terrorists must not succeed. For that we have to cooperate, we have to ensure maximum possible cooperation amongst civilised countries. But also, as the Prime minister said, in the final analysis it is struggle for the minds of our people." 6. News conference 7. British officials 8. SOUNDBITE (English) Tony Blair, British Prime Minister: "In Afghanistan millions of them came out to vote. In Iraq millions of them came out to vote. And the idea that it is somehow offensive to Muslim people that they are given the chance to vote is absurd. The people that are doing damage to Muslims are those terrorists who in a complete perversion of the true faith of Islam are bombing and killing innocent people in Afghanistan and in Iraq. And the reason they are doing it very simple. If they can stop democracy taking root, in Afghanistan and Iraq, if they can turn them into terrorist states then they gain support for their cause - exactly in a way they did in Afghanistan with the Taliban. But they know, however, that if we succeed as I believe that we will, in helping those countries on their feet as democratic countries, democratic nations where the people decide the governments, not terrorists or dictators of whatever nature, then that will deal a huge and decisive blow to worldwide terrorism. So my view of this is very simple - whatever feelings people have about the original decision in respect of Afghanistan or Iraq - what you have now is a United Nations process in which all sensible people should be backing the right of those two countries to elect their own government." 9. Reporters 10. Tony Blair and Manmohan Singh shaking hands STORYLINE: The leaders of Britain and India said they had reinforced the strong ties between their nations at talks on Thursday that yielded deals on allowing more flights between the countries and boosting cooperation between their film and oil industries. British Prime Minister Tony Blair said that in two days of meetings with the Indian Prime Minister Monahan Singh, a new modern relationship had been cemented between their two countries. A joint statement released after the summit said India and the European Union had pledged to boost anti-terrorism cooperation and crack down on terrorist financing and money laundering. Pointing out that most of the people killed in the recent bomb blast in Egypt were Muslims, Blair said there should be no compromise on global terror. Singh said India has been a victim of terrorism for more than two decades, and it will work with Britain to evolve an international norm for "zero tolerance". Singh said that at the meeting Blair also reiterated Britain's support for India's bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations security council.
