[앵커] 아픈 아이들에게 새 생명을 주고 떠나는 생후 12개월 서정민 군의 사연이 잔잔한 감동을 주고 있습니다. 뇌사 추정 상태로 석 달 연명 치료를 받아오다가 아이의 부모님이 어려운 결정을 한 건데요. 김경수 기자가 전해드립니다. [기자] 유모차에 앉아 엄마의 '잼잼' 소리에 손가락을 오므려 보는 남자아기. 이제 갓 돌을 지난 생후 12개월 서정민 군입니다. 하지만 지난 7월, 예기치 못한 사고 이후 이 아기의 웃는 모습은 다시 볼 수 없었습니다. 병원에 도착했을 때 뇌파가 잡히지 않을 정도로 상태가 좋지 않았고, 그 조그만 몸으로 석 달 동안 연명 치료를 받아 왔습니다. [이나라 / 서정민 군 어머니 : 예후가 안 좋아서 병원에서는 연명치료 중단도 얘기하셨는데 저희는 0.00001%라도 붙잡고 싶은 마음이잖아요. 조금이라도 정민이가 많은 친구들에게 좋은 일을 하려면 수술을 해야 된다 하길래…] 자식의 몸에 조그마한 상처만 나도 마음이 쓰린데 장기기증 수술 결정은 결코 쉽지 않았습니다. 하지만 아픈 아이들을 위한 일이라는 생각이 결국, 부모의 마음을 움직였습니다. [이나라 / 서정민 군 어머니 : (남편이) 우리 정민이가 그 아이들한테 새 생명을 주고 떠나는 일이 정말 값진 일이라고. 누구든지 할 순 있지만, 하는 게 어렵잖아요. 근데 우리 정민이가 그런 대단한 일을 하고 가는 거라고….] 이제 정민이를 떠나보내야 하는 부모의 바람은 아들의 사연이 널리 알려지는 겁니다. 좋은 일을 하고 떠나는 정민이를 위해 많은 사람들이 기도를 해주고, 또 앞으로 장기기증에 대한 부정적 인식도 바뀌길 희망하고 있습니다. He had been on life support for three months after being declared brain dead. His parents eventually made a heartbreaking decision. Reporter Kyung-Soo Kim has more. [Reporter] A baby boy sitting on a pushchair is folding his fingers, reacting to the sound of “Jam Jam” from his mother. He is 12-month-old Jeong-min Seo, who had his first birthday in hospital a few days ago. However, due to a serious accident, his smiling face hasn’t been seen since last July. When he arrived at the hospital, his condition was so bad that no brain activity could be detected, and he had to be put on life support for three months. [Na-ra Lee / mother of Jeong-min Seo : His doctor said his prognosis was too bad and suggested stopping the life support treatment. We wanted to hold onto the tiniest hope, even a 0.00001% chance... but the doctor told me that Jeong-min could do something wonderful for a lot of people if he had surgery...] It was agonizing for his parents to see even the smallest scar on their baby’s body. Deciding to donate their son’s organs wasn’t easy. It was the thought of ailing children that finally made up their minds. [Na-ra Lee / mother of Jeong-min Seo: (My husband said) it’s a priceless legacy that our son, Jeong-min, leaves after giving a new life to those children. Although anyone can do it, it’s actually a very hard decision to make. But my son is leaving after doing such an amazing thing...] The wish of the parents who have to say goodbye to their child, Jeong-min, is that the story of their son is heard across the world. They hope that many people pray for Jeong-min, who gave a final gift before departing, and that the stigma around organ donation diminishes.
