(8 Jun 2000) French/Nat Television cameras rolled, and former residents watched on, as French authorities destroyed an apartment building in Paris on Thursday. The complex had housed more than a thousand tenants in the low-income suburb of La Courneuve in Paris. But it was destroyed as part of an effort to improve the state of the neighbourhood. As explosives rang out, hundreds of former tenants took a last look at their former high- rise home La Courneuve, Paris. It took less than twenty seconds and around 400 kilos (883 pounds) to bring the building crashing to the ground. And as it fell, huge plumes of smoke rose up into the air. Before it was blown up on Thursday, the apartment building used to house 1200 people, stood 43 metres (141 feet) high and 186 metres (610 feet) long. There were 362 flats inside, spread across 15 floors. This was the largest of the buildings in the 'Cite Des 400' housing complex, and it was called "la barre Renoir". For those who'd called it home, however, watching its destruction was an emotional time. Stephanie - a young woman who'd spent her entire life in the building - was in tears after the implosion. SOUNDBITE: (French) Stephanie, Former Tenant "In less than six seconds, they have destroyed all my life. Honestly, my heart...if I lose someone, it wouldn't hurt so much as that, losing my house the way they have destroyed it. My heart, my legs, I feel shaky. I've no more reason to live." SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop (Stephanie) Former Tenant Another spectator said he'd worked as a doctor in the complex. SOUNDBITE: (French) "It was with a lot of emotion that I watched this building collapsing and I hope there will be a better future for all those people who have lived here and who have lost their past. We wish them a better future." SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop Former tenants have been relocated to smaller buildings nearby. They were asked to go because the government wanted to improve the state of the suburb. In this case, improving the building meant bringing it down. The total cost for the Thursday's implosion was around 3.3 (m) million U-S dollars (23 (m) million French Francs.
