[40:55] Finale and Credits From film, television, and theatre director Piers Haggard (1939-2023), this undervalued British folk-horror film features a cast of well-known film and television performers that includes Linda Hayden (best known for her roles in British horror films and sex comedies throughout the 1970's), Michele Dotrice, Tamara Ustinov, Simon Williams, former Doctor Who starlet Wendy Padbury, Anthony Ainley (1932-2004), Avice Landone (1910-1976), Charlotte Mitchell (1926-2012), Godfrey James (1931-2019), Howard Goorney (1921-2007), James Hayter (1907-1983), Patrick Wymark (1926-1970), and Welsh actor Robin Davies (1954-2010). Originally titled 'Satan's Skin, the film, set in the aftermath of the English Civil War, revolves around superstitions and folklore as a small rural community is thrown into turmoil when a farmer (Barry Andrews) uncovers a grisly skull. After reporting the find to a visiting judge (Patrick Wymark), it promptly disappears, never to be found again, but its malefic influence begins to work in insidious ways upon the village. From here on in the film charts the villagers descent into a crazed paranoia, driven by the presence of a cult like group of children trying to summon the demon Behemoth, led by the ironically named Angel (Linda Hayden). Sandwiched between 'Witchfinder General (1968) and 'The Wicker Man (1973), 'The Blood on Satan's Claw is just as effective as any Hammer horror or American shocker of its time, and still holds its own today as a great supernatural film. Haggard's other notable works include 'The Quatermass Conclusion (1979), 'The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu (1980), and 'Four Eyes and Six Guns (1992). Principal to the film's ominous mood is Marc Wilkinson's immensely satisfying score, with many tracks going on to be standard-bearers for the genre. The music is a collection of short pastoral and sweeping orchestral pieces, largely dominated by ondes martenot and cimbalom, with some rather chilling, bird-like descending clarinet phrases, and is very different from the gothic grandeur of James Bernard's (1925-2001) Hammer horror offerings. An Australian composer/conductor who had previously worked alongside Haggard at the National Theatre of London (1963-74), Wilkinson absolutely excelled himself here, and Haggard was so impressed with his music he invited Wilkinson to score two more of his films: 'The Quatermass Conclusion and 'The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu. Apparently Wilkinson also gave crucial advice to Paul Giovanni (1933-1990) who had been commissioned to score 'The Wicker Man (1973). Wilkinson's other notable film scores include 'If.... (1968), 'Eagle in a Cage (1972), 'The Triple Echo (1972), 'Eagle's Wing (1979), and 'Enigma (1982), whilst his television credits include the films 'Twelfth Night (1970) and 'The Case of the Frightened Lady (1983), and the series 'Play for Today (1970-79), 'Hammer House of Horror (1980), and 'Tales of the Unexpected (1981-88) among others. He also composed incidental music for numerous theatre shows throughout the 1960's to the mid-1970's. This video is for promotional use only. I do not own the rights to the music.
