How closely have you listened to “Bring on the Night” by The Police? It’s from their 2nd album, Reggatta de Blanc, released in 1979: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reggatt... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bring_O...) Andy Summers plays an interesting little arpeggio during the verses, and in addition to being beautiful, it makes a great exercise. In addition, I realized that it can easily be played in a different position on the fretboard, thereby providing an additional exercise. And since the two variations have different timbres, playing them together makes it sound even richer (esp. when the two versions are panned hard to the left and right). In this video I play it first along with the bass and drums from the recording, and then again without the backing track. In both cases Andy Summers’ fingering is in the left channel and my alternate fingering is on the right. Audio recorded along with video and processed entirely "in the box" using: Guitar: Martin 000-28 Pickup: Mojotone Quiet Coil NC-2 with MEMS microphone Interface: Steinberg UR44C DAW: Reaper Video Camera: GoPro Hero11 Black Mini and GoPro Hero8 Black Video Software: Handbrake, DaVinci Resolve Primary plugins used: Klevgrand: Brusfri Phil Speiser: THE_SMOOTHER NoiseAsh: NEED 73 Console EQ Universal Audio: Empirical Labs Distressor (4:1, Attack 0, Release 5, Detector HP, Audio HP and Dist 2, mix 50%) Klevgrand: Kleverb (medium room) TDR Molotok NoiseAsh: Rule Tec EQ1A NoiseAsh: Rule Tec EQ5M Plugin Alliance: Kiive Audio Tape Face Plugin Alliance: SPL Iron Plugin Alliance: Brainworx bx_masterdesk True Peak WA Production: BassShaper (studio bass track only) Ethics Statement I’m not a professional guitarist, and nowhere near virtuosic, so I make lots of mistakes. As a result, most of the audio in my videos is a composite of multiple takes. In my early videos the audio and video were done separately. I’d record the audio first, then record the video while playing along with myself (like in most music videos). This was always stated clearly in the video descriptions. As I’ve improved I’ve been able to change to a process where I now record the audio and video together, and then fix mistakes in the audio that I find particularly egregious. This is actually easier than my earlier process, and although it’s not a pure “live” performance it’s closer. I use all the typical audio processing tools such as EQ, compression, saturation, delay, and reverb as appropriate, and the plugins used are listed in the video descriptions. I have never and will never use tools like autotune or “snap to grid” to fix bad notes or timing mistakes (this should be obvious since my timing is often imperfect). I have never and will never artificially speed up a performance. For example, I’ll never record at 80% of the desired tempo and then play it back at 100%, making it appear that I was playing at full tempo when I really wasn’t. #music #guitar #acousticguitar #thepolice #andysummers
