IWE and TIPC Hold Beam-Raising Ceremony at Kaohsiung Port A6-B, Ushering in a New Chapter for Taiwan’s Offshore Wind Industry Intercontinental Wind Energy (IWE) and Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) hosted a grand beam-raising ceremony at Kaohsiung Port Intercontinental Phase 1 A6-B On September 11, 2024 to mark the completion of the deepwater heavy-duty quay and a state-of-the-art offshore wind assembly facility. This milestone project signifies a significant leap forward in Taiwan’s offshore wind industry, strengthening its position in the Asia-Pacific renewable energy supply chain. Advanced Facilities to Support Next-Generation Wind Turbines At the heart of the A6-B development is IWE's cutting-edge assembly facility, which features a 200-meter-long indoor production area, a vast outdoor assembly site, and Taiwan’s largest 1,500-ton rail-mounted gantry crane. This world-class infrastructure is designed to support the assembly of next-generation offshore wind turbines with capacities of 14 to 15 megawatts (MW), as well as subsea foundations up to 100 meters tall and weighing over 2,000 tons. With production operations set to begin in early 2025, the facility will deliver a significant boost to Taiwan’s offshore wind manufacturing capacity, meeting both domestic and international demand. Strategic Deepwater Quay to Bolster Global Supply Chain Integration The A6-B deepwater heavy-duty quay, designed and constructed by TIPC, serves as a critical logistics hub. Engineered with a caisson structure and a water depth of 13.5 meters, the quay facilitates efficient handling and transport of large subsea components. Its adaptable design accommodates both ship crane operations and self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs), enabling seamless movement of offshore wind equipment. The enhanced logistics capability positions Kaohsiung Port as a key export base for offshore wind components destined for Taiwan and the broader Asia-Pacific region. Since 2021, IWE has been actively advancing Taiwan's offshore wind supply chain, with substantial investments in both Pingtung and Kaohsiung. The NT$5 billion investment in the Kaohsiung Port Intercontinental Phase 1 development includes a 20-hectare industrial complex dedicated to large-scale production of subsea foundations. By establishing this comprehensive manufacturing hub, IWE aims to strengthen Taiwan’s domestic wind energy ecosystem while increasing its competitiveness in global offshore wind markets. Leadership Remarks on Taiwan’s Role in Global Energy Transition During the ceremony, IWE Chairman Shi-Ming Liao highlighted Taiwan’s advantageous wind resources and the strategic importance of offshore wind energy in the nation's energy transition. He emphasized the critical role of a localized supply chain and cross-border industry collaboration in supporting Taiwan's renewable energy ambitions. Chairman Liao reaffirmed IWE’s unwavering commitment to sustainable energy development, pledging to enhance production efficiency, promote green energy adoption, and foster international partnerships. The beam-raising ceremony marked a historic moment in Taiwan’s offshore wind sector. The event showcased IWE's latest advancements in industrial capacity and the strategic role of Kaohsiung Port as a maritime logistics hub. The A6-B facility is expected to catalyze Taiwan's offshore wind energy production, supporting the government’s renewable energy targets and furthering its global competitiveness. Witness this pivotal moment in Taiwan’s offshore wind development through our exclusive event footage, which highlights the A6-B facility's key features, the strategic design of the deepwater quay, and IWE's vision for the future of green energy.
