For today's tasting our Master of Wine David Allen samples the archetypal example if the distinctive Greek varieties Malagousia - the wine concerned is the 2022 vintage of Ktima Gerovassiliou's Single Vineyard Malagousia from the Epanomi PGI. Vangelis Gerovassiliou is arguably Greece's most respected winemaker. Having studied oenology in Bordeaux under the tutelage of the legendary Professor Emile Peynaud in the early 1970's he was winemaker for the pioneering Domaine Porto Carras in Halkidiki between 1979 and 1999. During his time as winemaker at Porto Carras Gerovassiliou discovered and cultivated a little known , traditional Greek variety, Malagousia. When he founded his own estate in Epanoumi in 1981 he naturally planted this variety there. Gerovassiliou is credited with having saved the variety from extinction. The vines that he planted in Epanoumi have been the main source block for Malagousia vines to be supplied to other wineries throughout Greece.
