Madinat al-Zahra was not a city that grew over time. It was built to declare power. Founded in the tenth century just outside Córdoba, this vast city became the ceremonial and administrative capital of Al-Andalus under the Umayyad caliphs. Palaces, reception halls, workshops, gardens, and mosques were carefully planned to project authority, legitimacy, and permanence. Yet Madinat al-Zahra did not last. Within a few decades, the city was abandoned, looted, and destroyed — not by foreign invasion, but by internal conflict during a period of civil war in Islamic Spain. Built to symbolize permanence, it survived for less than seventy years as a functioning capital. In this documentary, we explore: • Why Madinat al-Zahra was built • How it functioned as a caliphal capital • What daily life looked like inside the city • The role of architecture, craftsmanship, and political symbolism • How civil war led to its sudden collapse Using on-site footage, archaeological remains, museum artifacts, and historical context, this film traces the rise and fall of one of the most ambitious cities of the medieval world. Today, Madinat al-Zahra stands in silence, overlooking Córdoba. Its ruins remind us that power in history is fragile — and that even the grandest cities can vanish when unity is lost. Step & See explores history, architecture, and places through calm, cinematic storytelling. No rush. No noise. Just time, stone, and memory. #MadinatAlZahra #AlAndalus #IslamicHistory #LostCities #HistoricalDocumentary
