Factors Affecting Photosynthesis A. External Factors 1. Light Intensity: Rate of photosynthesis increases with light intensity up to a point, then becomes constant (light saturation). Quality (wavelength): Red and blue light are most effective; green is least effective. Duration: Longer exposure increases photosynthesis up to the plant’s capacity. 2. Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) Concentration Increase in CO₂ concentration increases photosynthesis up to a limit. CO₂ is often a limiting factor under natural conditions. Beyond optimum concentration, no further increase occurs. 3. Temperature Affects enzyme activity. Rate increases with temperature up to an optimum (about 25–35°C for most plants). High temperature denatures enzymes and reduces photosynthesis. 4. Water Required for photolysis in light reaction. Water stress causes stomatal closure → reduced CO₂ intake → reduced photosynthesis. 5. Oxygen High O₂ concentration inhibits photosynthesis due to photorespiration (especially in C₃ plants). B. Internal Factors 1. Chlorophyll Content More chlorophyll → higher photosynthetic capacity. 2. Leaf Anatomy Number and size of chloroplasts Thickness of leaves Presence of stomata 3. Age of Leaf Young, fully expanded leaves photosynthesize more than old or very young leaves. 4. Protoplasmic Factors Enzyme activity Internal CO₂ concentration Genetic makeup of the plant 5. Accumulation of End Products Accumulation of sugars can slow down photosynthesis due to feedback inhibition. Subscribe 'Crack NEET Biology' to learn the Biology concepts easily with focus on NEET.
