In 1996, near Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe, experienced river guide Paul Templer faced a terrifying ordeal. A bull hippopotamus attacked his group of canoes, initially capsizing one carrying an apprentice guide named Evans and two tourists. As Templer paddled to assist, the massive hippo turned its aggression towards him. Without warning, the hippo lunged and swallowed Templer headfirst, engulfing him up to his waist. Trapped in the darkness and stench of the animal's mouth, Templer felt immense pressure on his chest. In a desperate struggle, he managed to free one arm and realized he was surrounded by the hippo's bristly snout. Briefly spat out, he was immediately attacked again and dragged underwater. During the repeated attacks, the hippo inflicted horrific injuries, tearing open Templer's foot, puncturing his lung, and ripping flesh from his arm and chest. Despite the brutal assault and the cloudy water filled with his own blood, Templer was incredibly spat out a final time. Another apprentice guide bravely reached him, and he was pulled to safety. After a grueling eight-hour journey to a hospital, Templer underwent surgery where his severely damaged left arm was amputated. Miraculously, he survived the attack, which also tragically claimed the life of the apprentice guide, Evans, who drowned after the initial capsize. Templer later recounted his unbelievable experience in his book, "What's Left of Me," and went on to become a motivational speaker.
