Professor Rajmohan Ghandi, biographer and grandson of Mahatma Ghandi, speaks during the first summit on Religion, Conflict, and Peace-building on October 21,2007 Can the religions of the world work together to reduce violent conflict and build peaceful, pluralistic societies? This question is more challenging than ever, as we witness an escalation of global violence invoking religion. To address this challenge, Emory is holding its first in a series of summits on Religion, Conflict, and Peacebuilding. At this first summit, we feature on-stage, His Holiness the Dalai Lama—in conversation with religious leaders from Hindu, Christian, Jewish, and Muslim communities, including Rabbi David Rosen, Sister Joan Chittister, Professor Rajmohan Gandhi, and Professor Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na'im. How are they making peace differently, and how are they developing new models from their own peacemaking experiences—whether it be in Khartoum, in Jerusalem, in London, or in Delhi? And how are people addressing this issue "on the ground" in cities, in neighborhoods? What are the best local peacemaking practices in places affected by religious violence?
