WINTER SEASON JOBS - Guide to Working the Winter Season

Winter Season Jobs... In this video, we'll cover 1) Season Dates 2) Location 3) Housing 4) Money 5) Jobs 6) Planning your year. Season Dates 1) The start date is going to be early November. End of season, early April. So about 5 months. This is the general time frame for many seasonal jobs.  Location 2) Where are the jobs? The majority of jobs are in ski resorts. Colorado, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, California, New Mexico, Vermont. There are a few resorts in Alaska. Also, there are jobs in national parks in the winter season. The South Rim of the Grand Canyon hires year-round. The part of Yellowstone that remains open in the winter hires year-round. Parks like Yosemite NP, Rainer NP, as well. There are many jobs in Alaska in the summer. In the winter, not so much. There's a ski resort south of Anchorage that hires, Alyeska. And near Fairbanks, there is Chena Hot Springs, and Borealis Basecamp. Many people visit in winter to see the northern lights.  There are jobs in a few lodges in Northern Minnesota along the Northshore of Lake Superior, and a few places in the interior near the Boundary Waters and Voyageurs NP. Private rooms are usually an option at these locations in MN. Housing 3) It's going to be more expensive than in summer season. The options aren't as great. Smaller hotels are more likely to offer your own room at the hotel, or have housing with single, non-shared rooms. In Winter season, most companies that offer housing are going to charge more. Possibly in the range of $600/$700/$800 a month and up. It's still a better deal than rent for an average apartment in a city somewhere.  4) Jobs What are some of the jobs? For winter, many of the jobs are in ski resorts. So every job you can think of in the resort, or on the slopes. Lift operator, ticket taker, retail, grooming the snow slopes and trails, shuttle driver, valet, front desk, housekeeper, night audit, spa attendant, pool attendant, restaurant work, maintenance. Office jobs are usually available, administrative support staff, IT techs. If you are in a management position, you will of course have better pay, and often the option to have your own non-shared, private housing. 5) Money, Potential for Savings In general, from what I've seen, the pay seems to be a little higher in the winter. With higher housing costs, that will balance out and you would ideally be able to save a good amount. In the seasonal world, there is almost always the chance to pick up extra shifts somewhere, if you want to really grind and save for a few months. The ski season brings in a lot of high rollers, and from what I hear, the tips are the best in ski towns like Telluride, Breckenridge, and Vail. 6) Planning Your Year A few people I know save all summer, then go live somewhere overseas where cost of living is low. Essentially work for half the year, then take the other half off. Relax on a beach maybe in Mexico, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines. That's the life, take 5 or 6 months off, travel, relax. But if you want to work through the winter, you could still save a lot over that time. Maybe you want to reverse that, and work through the winter, and then take the entire summer off. It's up to you. You can design what you want your year to look like. That's definitely one thing I love about the seasonal work lifestyle  Wrap up When it comes to winter, the way I see it, if you're going to live in that climate, why not be somewhere to really enjoy the beauty of winter? In the mountains somewhere like Colorado. It's an amazing, inspiring feeling to wake up and see those snowy peaks every day. Living in a city in Winter, commuting in extreme weather, freezing temps, can be rough. The short days and the darkness and grey skies, the lack of sunshine can be tough to deal with for long stretches. At a resort, in a beautiful location, you're going to experience the best of winter.
