Sergeant Lavie Gehasi, blessed be his memory. Son of Orit and Yaakov. Born on July 29, 2004. Brother to Noam, Yagel, and Yedidya. Lavie grew up in the community of Hashmonaim. He attended 'Ramat Modiin' Elementary School, and later studied at the Bnei Akiva Yeshiva, 'Ner Tamid'. Lavie was surrounded by a group of friends from the community who were like brothers to him. He had great personal charm and stood out for his playful spirit, strong will, and independent nature. Lavie was a born self-starter, and whenever he was given a task, he carried it out with excellence and diligence. He felt a deep connection to nature and the landscapes of Israel, and enjoyed taking part in extreme sports. As a youth, Lavie was sensitive and empathetic, always attentive to others. At the age of 16, he began volunteering at the 'Kav Lachayim' organization, where he served as a personal mentor to Ido, who was born with cerebral palsy, and visited and cared for him regularly, with sensitivity and great love. Before enlisting, Lavie studied at the 'Lev Tel Aviv Yeshiva', and then at the pre-military preparatory program in 'Atzmonah'. In March 2023, he enlisted and was assigned to the leadership platoon of Battalion 931 of the Nahal Brigade. From the beginning of his service, he stood out for his leadership skills, and was slated to attend the squad leaders course. Due to the 'Swords of iron war’, he was unable to attend the course, but was appointed acting platoon commander. He performed his duties in a highly professional manner, and his friends trusted him as if he were a trained commander. They said that they always knew that if, God forbid, something happened, Lavie would protect them - and indeed he did. On December 20, 2023, during an operation in Gaza, a terrorist entered the building where Lavie's platoon was stationed. Lavie confronted the terrorist and managed to kill him. Immediately afterwards, an RPG was fired at the unit. Lavie’s body absorbed the blast, saving his comrades, but he was killed in action. After his death, his commanders eulogized him: “...It was important to Lavie to lead and be at the forefront, yet he never once failed to extend a hand and help others. He completed every task with excellence, always with humility...” Lavie was laid to rest in the military section of the Modi’in cemetery. He is survived by his parents and siblings. After his death, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant. Various memorial activities have been held in his memory, these include the introduction of a Torah scroll to the high school where he studied, the establishment of an accessible observation point, the 'Chamshush Kav Lachayim' activity organized by his friends, family, and the community of Hashmonaim, and the 'Lavie' camp for the movement’s members, organized by the community of Moshav Natur. After his death, his family arranged for his organs to be donated. Since his death, a great void has been left in the hearts of his family, friends, and the many people whose hearts Lavie touched, and his words will continue to resonate with them: “When you are having a hard time, know that there is always someone who is having a harder time, and help them.” Sergeant Lavie Gehasi - 19 years old when he fell in battle.
