In The Mood for Beira: Part 1 | Serra da Estrela, Covilhã, Belmonte & Sortelha | Travel Portugal

The Beira region in Portugal is sprawling, mysterious, and picturesque -- a region that quietly revels in its own unbridled magnificence, a region that offers some of the most dramatic landscapes you'll ever find in the entire country. This is the hinterland of central-eastern Portugal, the mountainous frontier that rises up to the mainland's highest altitudes in Serra da Estrela, the mountain range that sits like a glorious crown in this region. This is my first time in this part of the country, and I was enthralled by the number of visions of mountain towns and villages, some of which are untouched by time. During my stay here, I stayed in Pousada da Serra da Estrela, a 20th-century sanatorium turned historic hotel, and then afterwards, at Pousada Convento de Belmonte, a 13th-century Franciscan convent turned into a rustic rural retreat. Both of which are surrounded by nature, the silence and the purity of mountain air. Then I've had a taste of the Beira Interior wine region, thanks to the guide of sommelier Salvador Borges de Castro and Pedro Carvalho from Quinta dos Termos, who both introduced me to the superb and elegant wines here.
