The Master and Margarita (Full Film with subtitles).

You Tube say they have restricted this video in some countries. The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov (best English translation is by Michael Glenny). The Master and Margarita although is a very complicated novel it does have a relatively simple narrative, that reflects back on itself - reminding you as you progress of the story thus far, so you don’t need to go back constantly checking to see what you have read, you can simply read on to the end. (If however you do get confused with all these Russian names as to who is who, then the epilogue is like that found in a detective story, a summing up and reminder of who is who). The story begins: with Mikhail Alexandrovich (Berlioz) who is editor of a literary magazine and chairman of the board of one of Moscow’s largest literary associations, known by its acronym MASSOLIT. He is having a debate about the existence of God with his comrade Ivan Nikolayevich Ponyryov who is a poet who writes under the name of (Bezdomny). “Neither believes in God.” While they are in conversation professor Woland (The Devil) arrives on the scene: who they take for a foreign spy. ‘He speaks very good Russian’. Professor Woland (the Devil) is a specialist in black magic. He says that he has been invited to Moscow as a consultant to examine some authentic manuscripts of the tenth century master of black magic Gerbert of Avrillac, which have been discovered in the state library. But beneath the surface, since neither of our two friends believes in God, he is upset, because he knows that they do not believe in him (the Devil) either. So, Woland as a proof of the existence of God predicts Berlioz’s death. He says: ‘Annusha (Russian woman a member of the Kosmol) has already spilt the sunflower oil’ (that later causes Berlioz to slip and fall under a tram and have his head chopped off). For the seventh proof, the Professor tells the story about Pontius Pilate and that he has met him. He also mentions that Ivan Nikolayevich (Bezdomny) will meet a professor in a mad house (mental clinic). But later the professor of the asylum does not believe that Bezdomny has seen Pontius Pilate. So Bezdomny gets furious with them all, because he wants to catch the mad professor who is ‘getting away’, while they are all just talking about things that do not matter. Dr Stravinsky who is the professor of the clinic, must not be confused with Professor Woland (the Devil) who is professor of black magic. Ivan (Bezdomny) clarifies his story thus far to the professor: and how Berlioz was killed by a tram and, how he came to be in the clinic wearing only his underpants. Professor Stravinsky at the clinic is a kind man who wants to help Nikolayevich Ponyryov (poet Bezdomny) to get better. He listens attentively to him and then explains things to him very logically of what he thinks has taken place i.e. Ivan (Bezdomny) has had a terrible fright, over the untimely death of his friend Berlioz. But Bezdomny, still not satisfied, asks the professor for a telephone, the professor agrees to this. The poet phones the police telling them to fetch 5 motorcycles with side-cars and a dozen policemen armed with Machine guns to catch the mad professor, and tells them he is phoning from the mad house; the phone goes dead. The police have hung up. Other characters are Azezello, (murderer) Behemoth (cat) and Koroview (ex-quire master) are all in league together; helping Woland (the Devil). Koroview ex quire master is interpreter for Professor Woland of black magic. (They continuously cause havoc in Moscow). Nikolai Ivanovich is chairman of the Variety Theatre: he is framed by Koroview and taken away. And Varenuka the house manager is dealt with severely byWoland’s assistants. (Stepa is manager of the Variety Theatre: and Rimsky is the treasure). Meanwhile: Margarita wants to find her lover the Master who has written a novel about Pontius Pilate. She meets Azezello while sitting on a bench who arranges for her to meet Woland (the Devil) and to entertain his guests at Satan’s ball. She agrees to do this, because she sees this as a means to finding her lover the Master. So Azezello gives her some magic cream to rub on herself that will give her powers to fly to meet them later on; and thus she is able to fly naked, and goes to Satan’s ball where she entertains Woland’s guests. (Meanwhile Margarita’s servant Natasha also takes a fancy to this magical cream, rubs it on herself, and later meets Margarita while flying through the air. Natasha is riding on a big fat pig who is none other than Ivan). En route while Margarita is flying through the air she takes her revenge on one of the critics that criticised the Master’s writings. The critics name is Latunsky who Berlioz the editor worked for. She simply smashes his flat to pieces with a hammer. But fortunately for Latunsky, he is not at home. Margarita is reunited with her lover the Master, who has burnt his novel, but we find that ‘novels do not burn’.
