John Ditchfield was born in Blackpool. When he was 16 he started a job as an assistant to Italian master glassblower Franco Toffolo at the Venetian Glass Factory on the Squires Gate Industrial Estate in Blackpool. He spent seven years learning both the basic and complicated techniques of Venetian glassblowing under the tuition of Toffolo. With a small legacy from the sale of the family Hotel - John set up his first studio but unfortunately was shut down due to noise pollution. He was then invited back to the Venetian Glass factory as manager, Toffolo having left to work at Caithness Glass in Perth. During this time John discovered the Art Nouveau period, in particular, the glass of Tiffany and Loetz and was fascinated by Tiffany’s style and the complex processes which were used to achieve the fine effects. John travelled to Europe and further developed his glassmaking skills. In Holland, in the hope of learning iridising techniques, he met the glass designer AD Copier and William Hessen who had both worked as designers at Leerdam Glass. He had the opportunity of working with such glass artists as Sam Herman, Lubomir Hora and Pavel Molnar. In Germany, he worked alongside 30 Turkish glass blowers and he returned to Blackpool with many new techniques and skills. John and his team opened their first furnace at Talbot Road, Blackpool in January 1982 where they produced various art glass for over 18 years. In 2000 John deservedly realised his dream of living and working in the countryside when he bought Pointer House Farm where Glasform is now located. (yet still retains his roots, as it is under 10 miles from Blackpool) Over the years John has also worked with other skilled craftspeople in other fields such as jewellery, architecture and lighting. His skill as a glassmaker has been learnt not only from great masters but also from the experimenting that sometimes throws up great surprises. THE CONICAL SCULPTURE: You would be hard pushed to miss the 30 foot tall Art Sculpture which stands in the grounds of Glasform. This was created to celebrate Glasform's 25th anniversary and took over two years from conception to completion. Named the 'Dreamkeeper' it has over 4000 units of glass which bring it to life at night, as it is lit from the centre of the installation by a colour changing system of LED lights. THE FLAME: This flame sculpture is also on the grounds of Glasform. It stands roughly about 10 foot in height and has a stainless steel base with the flames comprising red and yellow units of solid glass. THE PEACOCK GATES: These impressive gates stand at the private entrance to the Glasform studio. They were inspired by the peacocks that once roamed the grounds. The peacock eyes in the tail of the birds are made of individual glass units with peacock eye patterens in the glass. With light shinning through them turquoise, black and gold can be seen. When reflecting the light they have rich iridescent tones.
