The diversity of canopy and understory cover of oldgrowth forests creates resilient, rich ecosystems that serve numerous ecological functions, including the filtration of water as it makes its way downstream into aquatic ecosystems. Yet large scale logging in the past has greatly reduced this diversity, and runoff from clearcuts has led to wide scale erosion, bringing soil and fine materials into streams to create fluctuating water levels and sedimentation, which destroys habitat for spawning and juvenile Salmon. As a result, many of the forests in these areas have become even-aged stands of monocultures of trees that fail to serve the same ecological function of the original forest stands they replaced. To rehabilitate these damaged ecosystems, we need to restore the biodiversity of these forests to include a mix of native tree species at different ages, which then allows for all the necessary understory to grow. Restoration here often involves thinning these dense monocultures to leave standing dead snags and coarse woody debris on the forest floor, which are important features for hydrological cycles and wildlife, while also creating canopy gaps that allows light to reach the forest floor. Here, a diverse mix of native conifers are planted to increase species richness and ages, while also allowing other vegetation to flourish. Breaking up these monocultures helps to create a multi-layered canopy with gaps and openings, perfect for a diverse medley of life to grow in, ultimately creating a more heterogenous structure to the forest than works to create healthy waterways downstream for Salmon to spawn and thrive in.
