"Exploring the Breathtaking Beauty of Mer de Glace: A Captivating Journey" Ever since two English explorers, William Windham and Richard Pocock, first discovered the Mer de Glace (“Sea of Ice”) in 1741, it has become one of the world’s most visited natural sites and is a huge draw of visitors to the Chamonix Valley. The area became accessible by mule from 1802, but it was the opening of the Montenvers Train in 1908 that really opened the site up to the masses. At the top, leave the station and the vista opens up to an extraordinary view of the glacier, frozen like a sea in motion. From the station, take the bubble lift down and enter the ice cave – carved into the glacier anew every year. You’ll be amazed to see the markers indicating how the glacier has retreated since the train line was completed in 1909. Please note: There are more than 500 steps between the bottom of the bubble lift and the ice cave, due to the continued movement of the glacier since the lift was installed. The 5.1-kilometre trip between Chamonix-Mont-Blanc and the Montenvers tourist site takes you up the mountainside. After a 20-minute climb, you’ll arrive at the terminal some 1,913 metres high. The view over Les Drus, Les Grandes Jorasses and Les Grands Charmoz is simply stunning.
