The mother of renowned landscape painter Maurice Utrillo, Valadon’s richly colored depictions of female bathers and floral still lifes are among her most revered works. Born on September 23, 1865 in Bessines-sur-Gartempe, France, her mother was unmarried and forced to leave her hometown to escape scandal. Valadon began her career in the arts as a teenager, in the Montmartre neighborhood of Paris. In Montmarte, she began working as a model for artists who patronized the cabaret Lapin Agile. Her clients included artists such as Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Jean Louis Forain. With their help, and the help of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Edgar Degas, Valadon learned to paint. Later, at the age of 44, she was able to focus solely on her art career. She died on April 7, 1938 in Paris, France. The artist’s works are in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Art Institute of Chicago, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York."
