The sounds of a Shetland summer. The hills and wetlands really come alive, there is so much bird life out there. This clip is from an evening walk at the end of June in Fetlar, an island know locally as the ‘Garden of Shetland’. I return over the hill in the simmer dim. At 60N there is a few hours of twilight before sunrise. The footage was taken at about 01:00. Snipe, Whimbrel, Meadow Pipit, Golden Plover, Northern Wheatear, Skylark, Water Rail , Red Throated Diver, Black Headed Gull, Red Necked Phalarope, are just a selection of the birds I noted contributing to the chorus of bird calls in the hills and mires of Fetlar on a walk in late June. You’ll hear a number of the birds mentioned in this short clip. I sat a long while listening to all the birds and enjoying the sundown. I can recommend the Merlin Bird ID app, it can pick out and identify the many bird calls as you are hearing them out on a walk, really quite amazing and so interesting to hear and identify the many calls of some of the birds such as the Snipe.
