You’ve heard the recordings of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys, and you’ve heard the radio broadcasts that he performed on. However, the bread and butter of the Bob Wills band were the dances they played. This was a dance band, not a performance band. When you saw them, it was at a dance. What you are about to hear is a complete Bob Wills dance date. There are not too many of these recordings around. Not very many people in the mid-1950s took the trouble to lug a heavy tape recorder into a dance hall and kept it running until the band finally stopped several hours later. This is a 5-Part recording of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys performing live at a dance on February 29, 1956 at the S & S Club in Temple, Texas. (Not Tyler, TX) Former Texas Playboy Johnny Gimble makes a guest appearance on the stage about half way through the program, playing and singing “End of the Line.” (See Part 3) If you ever wanted to experience what it was like if you saw Bob Wills in person but were too young to see him yourself, the sound of this video will be the next best thing. The audio isn’t great, but it is a historical document of what Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys sounded like in the mid-1950s. I have digitally remastered the original recording for clarity and stereo effect. I hope you enjoy it. – Louis Hatchett 1956 Live Dance at the S&S Club in Temple, TX – Part 1 Song List: 1.
