For the facelifted models, Volkswagen Group have integrated the 1.5 TFSI/TSI engine into the PHEV system, on top of this the battery has been increased in size from 12.8kWh (10.4kWh usable) to 25.7kWh (19.7kWh usable) this means a WLTP EV range of up to a huge 88 miles on the Sport specification with the 17” alloy wheels. S-Line & Black Edition (Model tested) have a WLTP EV range of up to 80 miles. A 6-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission is fitted, which offers seamless gear-changes, but a gear less than the 7-speed on ICE models. The A3 TFSI e, has a BIK rate of just 5% currently, meaning a 20% tax-payer will pay under £400 per year in BIK for a Sport model, going up to a higher spec will increase the tax, but not by too much. It is an also possible to spec a PHEV A3 under £40,000, therefore avoiding the premium car tax, currently an additional £410 per year VED, on top of the £190 VED. The Sport specification is the only trim available under 40K. All of the normal changes on the facelift are seen, with the tweaked front and rear end, as well as some new colour & wheel choices. Overall the A3 works well as a plug-in hybrid, being incredibly efficient and offering an excellent EV-only range, it is nice to see a hatchback packing in all of this technology, if you don’t want a large SUV or estate. VW Group have dominated the PHEV hatchback segment, with most of the A3 TFSI e’s competitors, being its own siblings.
