Feed barley comprises the majority of insured barley acres in Alberta. Barley for malt-end use is higher-value than feed end-use, but producers struggle to consistently meet the environmentally influenced requirements to achieve malting grade, which presents a barrier for barley production. Feed barley profitability requires high yields to balance the lower commodity value compared to other crops. A lack of high yielding feed cultivar options may also be contributing to the decline in barley acreage. Another option may be to manage malt barley varieties for feed-end use. O’Donovan et al. (2015) reported positive yield gains by new malt cultivars tested across Western Canada. Managing high yielding malt cultivars for feed market end-use may provide significant opportunity to quickly improve the profitability of barley production in Alberta.
