Rockhounding with Dinosaurs: Jasper, Gypsum, Petrified Wood

Come along with Shadow and me as we rockhound an area previously traversed by dinosaurs that left their tracks in the sands of time. As we walk along the same trail as the dinosaurs, we also see the beautiful desert floor in spring bloom. flowers of all different colors abound in an area that for the rest of the year is bone dry. In this part of Southern Utah, known as Warner Valley, and on to Hurricane Mesa, not only are there dinosaur tracks, but specimens of petrified wood, jaspers, and gypsum abound. Enjoy the drive through the desert from the dinosaur tracks to the top of Hurricane Mesa. There, we rockhound and find beautiful, deep red jaspers, a variety of petrified wood, and several spots of Gypsum. As the day passes we find ourselves immersed in the golden glow of the setting sun. It was just too beautiful to pass up, so we made a fire and cooked dinner. Afterwards, we went home to sort through the variety of rocks, jaspers, and petrified wood that we had gathered. We washed them up and share them with you, as well as tumbled and polished petrified wood that we had gathered on a previous trip. Shadow is a fun loving Jack Russell/Rat Terrier mix.
