Heroin Kills "Maggie's Story" 10 minute version

This is the 10 minute version telling Maggie's complete story. The 60 second PSA commercial can be found here:    • Heroin Kills 60 Second PSA   Save one life and you save the world! When a young man in Warminster (Warrington) , Bucks County died of a heroin overdose Ben Grove, a lifetime resident of Warrington as well as a volunteer firefighter(Bucks County Fireman of the Year) and community leader said, “the media should do something about this”. Ben started me thinking of what could be done with my media experience and contacts to bring the terror of deadly and cheap heroin to the usually bucolic roads and cul-de-sacs of Bucks County. That began a collaboration with the Bucks County District Attorney’s office in developing a concept to create and bring to reality a series of video messages that we hope will reach the young people and their parents. Enter “Maggie”, brought into the project by the D.A.’s office. With huge courage and a deep commitment to help spare others the scars that she and her family have suffered, Maggie agreed to share her story on video. She is the mother of a heroin addict. Her daughter has tried to kick the habit a half dozen times. Always relapsing. Maggie is EVERY-MOM! Her story is filled with fear and love. The love that only a mother can offer…unconditional and with everlasting hope. Maggie is motivated by the hope that the monkey will someday be off of her daughter’s back. That is Maggie’s motivation. It is with this love, courage and dream that Maggie speaks out on video. So, with a concept developed and a dedicated spokesperson to speak from the heart, my job turned to putting together the technical elements that would be needed to make our concept a reality. Bucks County is blessed to have many very talented and generous video experts. I am fortunate to know many of them and they are unlucky to know me. That is because I’m not afraid to twist an arm, or two, to convince these technical wizards of the value of volunteering in “HEROIN KILLS”. To no surprise, my task was fairly easy. In no time I had a studio, Corona Productions in Morrisville with all of their high-tech equipment needed for our production. A great colleague to coordinate all of the moving parts, and perhaps best of all, kids, kids from our Bucks County Technical High School and their teachers volunteering during their time off in the summer to record Maggie. With all of these assets in place we realized we could expand our recording session beyond Maggie’s presentation to the other key links in the chain of the terror of cheap heroin on our streets. Again no one said “NO”! We added the head of Lower Bucks Hospital’s Emergency Room. Dr. Dane Clarke, a physician who has all too often had to tell parents their child succumbed to a heroin overdose and the same for an EMT and the police all willing to share their stories of sorrow and death due to drugs. We added an interview with a rare survivor of a heroin addiction for an important vision of hope and called our filming complete. Our video library of the horror of heroin was now full. I often tell folks that shooting the elements of a film is only the “tip of the iceberg” the real work is in editing. This was no different. Dave Stiles, a multi Emmy Award winning editor was now center stage. Dave, with all of his expertise, matched with emotion and dedication began the task of making the message meaningful and timely so as to grab and hold our viewers, especially our most important ones, our kids. Dave took the raw footage, molded it like a potter at the wheel with clay, into a minutes worth of message that one can’t stop watching, and thinking about. Now it’s time to move to the next phase…distribution. We are asking Comcast and Verizon to show the Public Service Announcement on their cable systems as part of their commitment to the communities they serve. “HEROIN KILLS” will be made available to all of the schools in Bucks County through our Intermediate Unit. Copies will be provided to all of our municipalities, which operate government channels on their cable systems. The P.S.A. will be sent to all of the broadcast stations in the Greater Philadelphia market and made available to any and all organizations interested in showing it to their memberships. We welcome requests and are always looking for ways to reach the public with this project. Future projects with video already shot are being discussed and will hopefully begin post-production early in the New Year. Ben Grove who really started this project recently passed away following his long fight with cancer. He never saw the finished project. His wife Trish and four children survive Ben. My hope is that his legacy includes his idea that we did something to keep kids away from the tragedy of drugs.
