An introduction to economic modelling in the context of HTA

In this COVID-END webinar, the health technology assessment (HTA) team from the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Evaluation in Vancouver provided an overview of economic modelling in the context of HTA. They began by setting economic modelling amidst other types of modeling commonly used (particularly during COVID). Next they outlined the basic steps of an HTA – with specific reference to ‘rapid HTA’ – and described where economic modeling comes into play. They then provided some details on the modeling process – essentially what it is and how a basic model is developed - including what evidence is typically drawn on in support of this activity. The webinar closed with some common pitfalls to watch for as well as the reach of these studies in terms of policy-making.
