Hello and welcome to BTC video number 4 featuring the amazing Metrovick CO BO In March 1959, to compete with road transport, the 'Condor' express container overnight freight trains were introduced between Glasgow and London, hauled by the latest diesel locomotives (Metropolitan Vickers Co Bo’s). These trains were the forerunners of Freightliner services. The name 'Condor' was derived from 'Container Door to Door', and the service operated via Leicester, Sheffield, Leeds and Carlisle. A full 404 miles in all. Introduced between 1958 and 59, they weighed 97 tonnes, had a top speed of 75MPH with 1200 HP and a very good 50,000lbs tractive effort. They had steam heating for passenger work. These locos were designated type 2s in the power classification range Metropolitan Vickers had experience of building diesel locos for Ireland. Crossley marine two stroke engines were used the same as used by the British Admiralty. BR wanted a 1200hp engine with maximum axel weight of 18tons so MV took the unusual step of using a CO - Bo arrangement whereby one bogie had six wheels while the other had four Sound scape by kind permission of relative in Australia from vintage tape recordings, hence sound loss.
