The Roland AIRA Compact P-6 Sampler offers 4 sample rates when recording: 44.1 kHz, 22.05 kHz, 14.7 kHz and 11.025 kHz. Here's the samples I'll be using as examples: 0:00 Drum Loop 0:35 Drum Break 1:07 Piano 1:43 Guitar 2:17 Bass 2:52 Saxophone 3:21 Vocals 3:44 8-bit [Game Boy] Drum Loop - from "Boozed Up Drum Loops" (https://bsta.rs/Hccp1f). Drum Break - a snippet from a session with drummer Danni Ogilvie we recorded years ago. Piano - a short jazz turnaround I played. Guitar - from "Lo-Fi Jazz Guitar [Loops & Chords]" (https://bsta.rs/w2MdK7). Bass - from "SP-202 Lo-Fi P Bass" (https://bsta.rs/OFqwYU) made on P-6. Saxophone - saxophonist Niko Halfmann from "The Nutty Boys" recording "Harlem Nocturne". Vocals - Nas "Stillmatic (Intro)". 8-bit [Game Boy] - from "THAT GAME BOY BASS" (https://bsta.rs/QSuIqj) made on P-6. All in all, I found the lower sample rates to be much smoother and less destructive of that of the SP-202 or SP-303 which put similar numbers up on the board...samples on the P-6 just seem to get less bright. In some cases (like the BASS) I couldn't really hear a difference. On the DRUM LOOP & DRUM BREAK you mostly hear a difference in the hi hats...it's a sound I like, darker. Brighter samples, such as the SAX and VOCALS, you hear the dulling of the high frequencies much much more...what I have found that these are also the sort of samples I'd resample at 11kHz with Isolator (just Mids) and Lo-Fi button on to get the gritty lofi sound I like. The reason why it's great that the lower sample rates are so smooth is that you're probably gonna need them. The sample limit per pad is 6 seconds at 44.1kHz mono (that's 3 seconds in stereo)...BUT then you sample at 22.05kHz and that doubles your sample time. Maximum time per sample - 44.1 kHz, Mono : 5.9 seconds 22.05 kHz, Mono : 11.8 seconds 14.7 kHz, Mono : 17.8 seconds 11.025 kHz, Mono : 23.7 seconds (For stereo samples, the time is half.) A tip, if you need to sample something very long BUT the 11kHz sample rate is too dark, try sampling while Isolator is boosting the high frequencies, you may find it compisates for the sample rate drop...that's kinda sorta how Dolby works on tape decks...kinda sorta...
