History of Durbar High School. In the midnight of the Aswin 1903 BS (1846 AD) Nepalese history turns into the Dark Age in terms of politics and education after the massacre incident designed by the Jangabahadur Rana in Hanumandhoka palace. Rana took all the political rights from the King Surendra Shah and declared himself Primeminister and the army chief. Along the declearation of Rana oligarchy, education and any criticism against Rana rule were restricted. Restriction on the open education system, Rana family enjoyed all the political power and took people far from the light of education. Jangabahadur Rana was hastily ready to compensate any cost to make a good relation with the then British Empire to have strength in his family rule. In BS 1906 (1849 AD) Jangabahadur Rana went Britain in the invitation of the Queen of England. Amazed with the British development he realized that one should have good education to achieve personal development and national recognition.Jangabahadur had a mediator to communicate with officials in England that made him feel humiliated. In order to build strong relation with the then British Empire, Jangabahadur developed an idea to teach English language and called an Englishman to educate his family. In 1853 AD, Jangabahadur brought Mr. Ross as an administrator and Mr. Canning as the principal from England and to start a school in his Thapathali palace where central bank of Nepal is located now. Jangabahadur prohibited others to obtain education in this school rather than his own family members. But, When Dhirshamsher Rana was appointed as the director of education, he granted an access to education to his relatives and administrators. School was running and numbers of the students also increased. But the school frequently used to shift from one place to the other. Sometimes in “Dhirshumsher’s Palace”, sometimes in “CHARBURJA Palace” sometimes in “NARAYANAHITI Palace” and sometime in “THAPATHALI Palace”.As a result, common people were barely informed on the where abouts of the school and what is being taught there. For 38 years school was running ‘frequent shiftings’ from palace-to-palace. School got its permanent address opposite to Ranipokhari when Birshamsher built a school building in 1981 AD. School was named as DURBAR School because of its ‘Durbar’ like size and prior to Birshumsher School was running from palace-to-palace that permitted only the members from Rana family. It was Birshumsher who opened the gate of education for common people when he was made the Prime minister. But nobody was conscious that one should have education due to caste discrimination, exploitation, slavery, and sati pratha. It was Dev Shumsher who announced freeship and grants of 360 k.g.s of unprocessed rice annually and NRS 5 per month to increase the numbers of students but no one was ready to have English education. In those days DURBAR School was affiliated with KOLKATA University and government used to provide all the travel expenses and even more for appearing matriculation examinations. English medium education was unfavorable to the students that compelled them to leave school. After that, government decided to affiliate with PATANA University. Students had to go to PATANA in order to attend examination. This system existed from 1918 AD to 1927 AD. Traveling to India for examination was tedious. In 1928 AD government decided to faciliate examination program in Katmandu in affiliation with PATANA University. Shesh Raj Dali is a living legend of the last batch of the matriculation exam of the year 1933 AD. #DurbarHighSchool #VirtualTour #EducationHistory Visit Facebook page / subinpailk follow Insta: / subinpailk © Subin Pailk (www.eastchannel.com.np) Using of this video on other YouTube channels or other social media without prior permission will be strictly prohibited.
