July nineteen forty four. Chicago Stadium shakes under the lights. More than twenty thousand Democrats pack the tiers, wiping sweat from their faces and waving handmade signs. Down on the floor, a rolling chant for Henry Wallace rises from the aisles as delegates call to keep him on the ticket and try to prove where their loyalties lie. A short walk away, in a plain hotel room, a gray haired senator from Missouri sits on the edge of a twin bed telling visitors that the vice presidency is not a job he wants and that he would rather stay in the Senate. In a smoke filled suite a few floors away, party bosses talk bluntly about what they will not say on stage. Franklin Roosevelt is seriously ill, and whoever they choose for vice president in nineteen forty four will probably become the next president before the term is over. What they decide in those rooms will block Henry Wallace, push Harry Truman into the spotlight, and put a little known small town politician in charge of ending the most destructive war in history.
