Philip Hayes was Heather Professor of Music at Oxford University in succession to his father, William Hayes. Whereas William had the pleasure of hosting Handel's visit to Oxford, Philip hosted that of Joseph Haydn, during which the latter's "Oxford" Symphony was performed, and one of Hayes' organ concertos. Philip Hayes wrote a set of six keyboard concertos which the title page of the original published edition in 1769 species as being suitable for organ, harpsichord or forte-piano. Since there is a distinct lack of commercially available recordings of works by Hayes, we have produced this computer-generated recording using instruments from the Vienna Symphonic Library, and a Garritan organ. The recording was mocked up using Vienna's spatial model of the 16th century Pernegg Monastery Church in Lower Austria. The orchestra was placed in the west end gallery around the organ. The video of this recording shows they keyboard part from the original 1769 publication. The work is scored for keyboard and strings (both solo and tutti) and following the convention of the period we have added oboes doubling the violins and a bassoon doubling the cellos. Our aim is to interest both performers and audiences in an appreciation of the music of Philip Hayes hoping in turn to encourage live performances of his works and commercial recordings. We intend to employ computer technology to re-introduce a number of further such overlooked works by Hayes and other composers.
