If you are in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei etc., the akad nikah (also known as 'Aqd Al-Qirān, عقد القران, Ijab Kabul, Ijab Qubul) marital practice is pretty much the same, but elsewhere in the Muslim world, this ceremony is done slightly differently depending on the officiating imams, scholars, mosques, school of thoughts, mazhabs (Syafie, Maliki, Hanbali & Hanafi) etc.. In addition to our own, we have been to several akad nikah ceremonies officiated by different Imams (or Qadi) at different mosques (or at private home ceremonies) throughout the United States and locally, but we have not been to one performed by Professor Dr. Sheikh Mohamed Abdelati. Some Sheikhs or Imams will just recite the components of the nikah and the groom will just have to say I accept, some will just say in complete Arabic etc.. Sheikh Abdelati is originally from Egypt which follows Mazhab Maliki. Anyways, since we've asked Sheikh Mohamed to perform the akad, we wanted to know it is done. So before the ceremony, we're been looking around to see if anyone has a video of akad nikah performed by Sheikh Mohamed but no one has it. We wanted to see how it was performed so that the father of the bride and the groom can prepare accordingly. Keep in mind when you're watching this video that the groom and the father of the bride didn't have any practice, didn't know what to expect and didn't have any idea what they have to say. So if anyone here (in New Haven - Bridgeport area) wants to utilize Sheikh Mohamed in the future, hopefully this video can be served as a guide. Also those in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, etc.. who haven't seen a different version of the 'aqd, hopefully this video will be a learning experience or educational. We also had several non-muslim friends in the audience during this ceremony. Hopefully they can learn about the Islamic wedding solemnization and see how simple and beautiful the ceremony is. What we really like about the way 'aqad nikah officiated by Sheikh Mohamed Abdelati is that he doesn't mention the amount of the mahr or dowry during the ceremony. We think this is importance because if the mahr is too expensive, it will cause riak (or showing off), and if the mahr is too cheap, it might cause embarrassment to the bride or the groom or both. In this way, the dowry or mahr remains a private matter between the bride and the groom (and or their family members). In Islam, marriage is a legal contract between two people. Both the groom and the bride are to consent to the marriage of their own free wills. A formal, binding contract is considered integral to a religiously valid Islamic marriage, and outlines the rights and responsibilities of the groom and bride. There must be two Muslim witnesses of the marriage contract. In keeping with the eternal tradition of our Prophet Muhammad (S) in the style of the recitation of the marriage Aqd, as he had done during the marriage of his daughter Fatimah binte Muhammad (as) to Ali ibn Abi Talib (as), the ceremony is preceded by a Khutbah or introduction extolling the Oneness of Allah (SwT) and His characteristics, and then sending praise and prayers upon the Prophet of Islam (S) and his noble family members. Once this has been recited, the actual Aqd or contract is performed. Mahr The marriage-gift (Mahr) is a divine injunction. The giving of mahr to the bride by the groom is an essential part of the contract. 'And give the women (on marriage) their mahr as a (nikah) free gift" (Quran 4:4) Mahr is a token commitment of the husband's responsibility and may be paid in cash, property or movable objects to the bride herself. The amount of mahr is not legally specified, however, moderation according to the existing social norm is recommended. The mahr may be paid immediately to the bride at the time of marriage, or deferred to a later date, or a combination of both. The deferred mahr however, falls due in case of death or divorce. One matrimonial party expresses 'ijab" willing consent to enter into marriage and the other party expresses 'qubul" acceptance of the responsibility in the assembly of marriage ceremony. The assembly of nikah is addressed with a marriage sermon (khutba-tun-nikah) by the Muslim officiating the marriage. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) made it his tradition (sunnah) to have marriage sermon delivered in the assembly to solemnize the marriage. The sermon invites the bride and the groom, as well as the participating guests in the assembly to a life of piety, mutual love, kindness, and social responsibility. We strongly encourage you to watch and listen the khutbah (wedding speech) delivered by Sheikh Mohamed during Amirul & Nurul's aqad nikah ceremony.
