“The early bird gets the worm” is an old adage that proved true for creators John McLean (Big John Outdoors) and Jack Moran (Yakin’ with Jack) during a late spring fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico. The team capitalized on a calm weather window and took their Mako 214CC offshore to blue water, aiming to land a trophy wahoo. Wahoo bite is best in low-light conditions, so the team had to make the morning hours count. After an hour of high-speed trolling, John and Jack had just landed a cow mahi-mahi when the Penn International 30W started to sing, with line peeling off the reel rapidly. A second strike on a different rod followed, prompting the team to scramble to keep both fish on the lines. It wasn’t long before a 70-pound wahoo and a 30-pound king mackerel were gaffed and brought on board.
