Downtown Wytheville "A Story of Revitalization"

Just a little over a decade ago, the once-vibrant heart of our community was struggling. Vacant storefronts, dilapidated buildings, few businesses, and outdated infrastructure had taken their toll. Quite frankly, downtown no longer reflected who we are as a community or who we aspired to be moving forward. While some downtown districts across the state and region were thriving and creating places where locals and visitors alike wanted to gather, ours was falling behind. It was long overdue. It was time to change the narrative from the familiar story of how urban sprawl and strip malls hollowed out downtowns in the ’80s and ’90s and replace it with a grassroots effort to revitalize the heart of our community. With a small group of passionate, dedicated community members and elected officials leading the charge, the Town of Wytheville was awarded a Community Development Block Grant to launch what became known as the Streetscape Project. Through this effort, Wytheville achieved designation as a Virginia Main Street community, and Downtown Wytheville Inc. was born. It was time for the plan to become action and for vision to become reality. In the early days, we looked outward for inspiration, studying best practices from other towns and communities. Today, that story has come full circle. Communities now reach out to us, asking how we implemented meaningful changes right here at home. In just over ten years, we have gone from a downtown many people avoided to a place where people want to be. A place that encourages families, friends, and neighbors to gather. With vibrant events, safe and welcoming pedestrian spaces, and a growing, thriving business community, our downtown has reclaimed its role as the heart of Wytheville. And the heart tells us everything about the health of a community. Right now, our heart is getting stronger, and we are committed to keeping it that way. This video offers a snapshot of our revitalization story and demonstrates how public and private partnerships can truly advance and shape a community in positive, lasting ways. Thank you to everyone who has played a role in this journey, especially those who have helped give our residents, and most importantly our youth, a reason to be proud and to feel good about staying or coming back to build their hometown. The work is never done, and we will continue pushing for all that is possible here.
