When the signs of Mahapralaya were seen, then Lord Shiva manifested himself in the form of Linga and stopped the war. It is believed that the place where he assumed this divine form, that place became famous as Kathgarh Mahadev. This temple has been worshipped since the Vedic period but it was rebuilt by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. According to folk tales, this village was earlier a big town, where judicial decisions were taken. Criminals were tied in wooden shackles, due to which this place was named Kathgarh.
