A patient lies in the trauma unit with a knife still lodged in his back. A glimpse into the current state of Groote Schuur Hospital Emergency and Trauma units. These cramped conditions are the daily reality for patients and doctors who rely on outdated and malfunctioning equipment to save lives. Unreliable power supplies often force surgeons to perform life-altering surgeries using the torch lights on their phones. The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, in partnership with Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) and the Groote Schuur Hospital Trust, is preparing to launch a new world-class Emergency Centre in early 2026. The facility is set to transform emergency care in the province, offering rapid, life-saving treatment to thousands each year. While government funding covers construction, an additional R20 million is needed for specialised trauma equipment, including mobile ventilators, advanced imaging machines, trauma resuscitation beds, and a whole-body Lodox X-ray system. These tools will allow medical teams to respond with speed and precision in critical moments. The Groote Schuur Hospital Trust is appealing to individuals, corporations, and foundations to support this initiative, either through one-off contributions or long-term partnerships, helping to build a lasting legacy of excellence in public healthcare.
