When Dalia from Corremos Sacramento first connected me with Ivan Casillas, I had a feeling this was going to be a true connection. After featuring him in our How It All Started series on the Run Tri Bike website, I found myself following his journey. Not because I had to. Because I wanted to. Ivan is one of those rare humans whose energy jumps off the screen. Every post feels like a reminder that running isn’t just about miles logged but about the connections made. So yes, we started with the important debate: pineapple on pizza. (He’s a yes. And yes, we discussed whether ham and bacon are required for legitimacy.) But what unfolded after that was the kind of conversation that reminds me why we started the Fireside Chat. Ivan didn’t always identify as a “runner.” The evolution of going from someone who ran to someone who truly embodies the running community is awesome to hear. In this episode, he breaks down what the runner’s high actually feels like, what bonking teaches you, and those strange, beautiful moments that only show up when you’ve spent time alone with your thoughts on the road. We traded race nutrition horror stories (including my gel miscalculation disaster at a relay in Indian Wells), laughed at lessons learned the hard way, and talked about how experience humbles you in the best possible way. But here’s what stuck with me most: Ivan is what I call a “keeper of secrets.” He’s the guy people open up to during long runs. The listener. The steady presence. The one who reassures without dismissing. As a CIM ambassador, father, husband, analyst, and friend, he doesn’t compartmentalize those roles, he carries them all with intention. We talked about how the marathon training block is the real marathon. About running in the rain, heat or wind because race day doesn’t care about comfort. And we leaned into his philosophy: don’t let perfect be the enemy of good enough. Training and life advice. He refuses to gatekeep this sport. Whether you’re chasing a Boston qualifier or chasing your first mile without walking, Ivan adds seats to the table. He doesn’t build barriers. He builds bridges. We closed with cherry Garcia ice cream, brownie corner-piece loyalty, and chilaquiles as recovery fuel but even in the food talk, you could feel what makes this episode special: connection. This is why we do Fireside Chat. Not for highlight reels. Not for podiums. For people. Ever ask the question: Do I “belong” in running… this one’s for you. 👇 Drop a comment: • When did you start calling yourself a runner? • What lesson did the marathon teach you? • Pineapple on pizza—yes or no? Like. Subscribe. Share it with your run club. And as always..... No podium required. Just show up.
