River restoration projects have typically focused on "re-meandering" straightened streams, assuming these streams initially exhibited single-channel meanders. River morphology is influenced by biology, hydrology, and geology. Valley restoration therefore requires thinking beyond the river channel. The philosophy of "Zero State" restoration is to harness natural processes to rehabilitate a multi-channel network from a modified and incised (or renaturing) channel, and to reconnect the stream to its floodplain. This approach produces a more resilient habitat mosaic than typical single-channel restoration.
