To learn more, visit L’Air du Bois: https://www.lairdubois.fr/pas-a-pas/1... How do you bend that? On the theme of curved stairs, history, and spatial vision: How do you make a twisted piece of wood from a straight piece? Jacky tells us: "I know, it's twisted!" However, his stairs are twisted. He's not! Regular visitors to the L’Air du Bois platform know him by his nickname: "kaj." Jacky has been interested in stairs for many years; the line is a passion (an ancestral tracing method). He loves to share his knowledge and is always learning. Visitors to the "Touch Wood" Workshop were able to meet him in 2022. Jacky arrived almost unexpectedly, discreetly and quietly! It was his friends from "L'Air du Bois" who asked us if it would be possible for "Kaj" to present some drawings and models of staircases. We managed to find him a small space at the entrance to the "Herminette" conference space. This small space was not up to the task he was presenting! Jacky had a fairly standard career path. At 14, he wanted to be a carpenter. He spent three years at a technical college and then two years at the Lycée National du Bois in Mouchard, in the Jura region, which soon after became the European Training Institute of the Fédération Compagnonique des Compagnons du Tour de France. His working life began with projects that Jacky described as "routine" (lots of doors and windows, this was in the 1970s). He quickly became interested in staircases. This was clearly what would become his passion. He initially learned from a veteran. Later, he took continuing education courses. Jacky changed companies. His primary goal remained to specialize in staircase construction. Curves and lines would become his favorite subjects. In retirement, he continued to study drawings, trying to pass on his knowledge and continually learn. Jacky, always discreet, humble, and simple, never mentioned the few pages that Master Craftsman Étienne Desthuilliers devoted to him in his fabulous yet little-known book: "Wooden Handrails. Debarked Ramps" (The Know-How of a Carpenter), a book he edited himself, which we highly recommend you get your hands on! This book is a kind of monument. Jacky is truly a monument! This year, by popular demand and also because he loves to share, Jacky will be speaking at a conference that will delight staircase professionals and fascinate laypeople!
