This video discusses the novel Bear, by Marian Engel, which is a Canadian adaptation of an old Scandinavian/Baltic mythic figure: the woman who takes a bear as a lover and gives birth to heroes. Engel's novel puts a distinctly Canadian spin on this mythical story by filtering it through what Northrop Frye called the "garrison mentality" in Canadian literature, which is a kind of existential terror of the wilderness. Engel plays with both her mythical source and with garrison mentality, challenging the limits of each. *If you’d like to reference this information or would like to ask me a direct questions for an assignment you are working on, that’s awesome and I am glad to help.
