A playthrough of the hidden boss Klassic Reptile in the Steam port of Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat 9/MK9. Goddamn, what a reunion. MK9 includes all four classic hidden bosses as hidden bosses in this game, which means we get to see Jade, Noob Saibot, Smoke and Reptile again, all in one good. I rarely get to do something this thematic, and it’s made even better by the fact that I’ve already covered these characters before in their respective games. True to detail as you’d expect of a game this good, each classic boss retains their defining elements from before. For instance, Reptile here has moves from both Scorpion and Sub-Zero, as well as having greater walking speed than any other character. Jade, for instance, cannot be affected by projectiles at all. I’m so glad they went to this sort of effort; recreating these classic characters for the modern era. Hell, even the requisites are mostly the same; Reptile here can only be fought on The Pit stage via being your opponent with a double flawless victory and a stage fatality, when you’ll then fight him on a hidden stage at the bottom of the pit! Such an extensive reboot, I can’t help but gush over it every two seconds. However, these bosses are also quite intentionally limited, and you can see why they weren’t made playable. They don’t have a super meter, which means they have no X-Rays nor enhanced moves, no fatalities, and they also don’t have many moves as it is. Reptile here has a decent selection, including Sub-Zero’s freeze and slide attacks, Scorpion’s spear as well as his own invisibility attack, but Smoke only has Scorpion’s spear, Hellfire Punch and Air-Throw, and Noob’s only special move is his teleport attack! Indeed, they compensate for this in the fights with their insanely good AI (not to mention taking reduced damage for some reason), but just like the regular bosses they’re meant to be CPU-only for a reason. Classic Reptile isn’t half-bad. His ability to use both Sub-Zero’s freeze and Scorpion’s spear is nice and authentic, and him retaining both a slide and an invisibility move was a good choice as well. Unfortunately, the ability to use both is rendered a bit moot by the fact that using a projectile twice actually breaks the opponent out of the hold, unlike in MK1 where you could follow up a freeze attack with a spear just fine. His combos are pretty good on the whole, mainly because he’s basically just a buffed Sub-Zero/Reptile combo, and that slide move can be used in so many combos it’s unbelievable. Classic Reptile also seems to have more combos than the other unplayable bosses, which crossed with his increased speed (and goddamn is it notable) makes him a unique and pretty damn fun experience. Seeing the original hidden boss in his prime again, it’s damn nice. MK1 Reptile is one of my favourite characters in existence, as you’d expect from someone doing a series like this, and this is just a great tribute to him. Lastly, I’m using the Ultimate Boss Mod 2.0 for these videos. This one adds the hidden bosses, but unfortunately it doesn’t work on Steam, and can only be used with the retail version of the game. C’est la vie I suppose; at least you can play as these guys. Also, LOOK AT HIS FACE AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA. Up next, a return to the hidden MK2 bosses.
