None of us were born disliking our hair, it was something that was covertly (sometimes overtly) implied to us through commercials, advertisements, movies, tv shows, magazines, songs, celebrities, etc. The social media age that we live in has only fueled this silent propaganda. Under the umbrella of the beauty industry is a variety of categories that can be used to control how men and women see themselves. The black hair industry in particular has benefited greatly by exploiting the insecurities of black and brown people all over the world. If they can convince you that the way you are is “wrong”, they can control you as a consumer. Join me in this short introduction to one BIG problem we as black people are facing.
