“Hope” is a powerful cue featuring a specially reimagined version of “Oh My God” by Jars of Clay. Dan Haseltine was the principal lyricist & lead singer of Jars. He & Matthew S. Nelson gifted us a new experience on this piece from @brockheasley6125 stunning sci-fi, allegorical story of Job, @theofficialshiftfilm . As you take in the lyrics, music, acting & cinematography, also receive the humanity. Such a diversity of people, emotion, fear, hope, longing, need & intention as Kevin ( portrayed by Kristoffer Polaha) runs with every ounce of strength & hope within him to get back to the woman he loves & the world he once knew. Kevin’s hope at this moment is based on outcome, which is so human. Dan’s song speaks to a Hope that comes face to face with evil, injustice & pain, that remains. Dan sings a compelling list of run-on phrases naming people who “always say…Oh my God.” What a vision of our beautiful & broken world together calling out to God in pain or in vain, in praise or rage, in desperation or in Hope. For as many reasons as there can possibly exist to be lost or seeking, broken or mending, longing or grateful, we are unified, whether we know it or not, by our human experience of suffering & our need for mercy. 🎶Dan shared a very interesting & intimate look at his history with this song & its place in The Shift. “I was skeptical when Brock first pushed for “Oh My God” to be in the film. To me the song carries the heart of a distant season of life when I was trying to find an outlet for my own anger & frustration with the world’s poverty crisis. The song was a lament & a tantrum at the same time. It felt out of place both stylistically & topically for the film. So, I pushed back quite a few times. It became very apparent that Brock was not going to budge. I have always believed that songs are living things with the ability to change & adapt. Even lyrics can take on entirely different meanings when someone’s life experience brings them back around. So the ‘work’ of reapproaching the song was a gift. I had never imagined a version of the song grounded in synthesizer tones & large orchestral percussion. It’s quite satisfying to hear this version embedded in the Hope cue.🎶 Dan’s life is an example of Hope in action. Hope is a practice. It’s a declaration of the suffering & darkness in this world & the firm belief that there is a Love that is bigger than pain & injustice. We are invited to participate in it. When Hope & Love meet suffering, it becomes mercy…a mercy that Dan has devoted his life to through Blood:Water, his art, writings & community service. So grateful he was willing to reimagine, with Matt, and bring us this gift. #brockheasley #danhaseltine #matthewsnelson #theshiftfilm #bloodwater
