Cheetah population saved from extinction by humans in Africa, wildlife documentary. Cheetahs were declared extinct in Malawi twenty years ago. Thanks to a massive effort by African Parks and the government, four cheetahs were successfully introduced into Liwonde. And one went on to have cubs. The young cheetah cub being darted and collared today is very important for the breeding population of cheetah in Liwonde. Tranquilizing animals is very important for veterinary medicine. The radio-tracking collar has been modified to give GPS location of the animals a few times a day. Monitoring them is crucial to their survival, and that responsibility falls to Olivia Sievert from African Parks. Liwonde covers 550 square kilometers of wilderness, and cheetahs are well camouflaged, so finding them is not easy. The mother is understandably protective of her three cubs and sees veterinary Dr. Amanda and Olivia as a threat. The team at the Lilongwe Wildlife Trust in Southeast Africa is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating injured and orphaned wild animals, ensuring they get back into the wild where they belong. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in Africa and resources are scarce, so the team has to make do and improvise. Power cuts are common, the rainy season inundates the center, but work must go on.
