The Karabiner 98k was the standard rifle of the German Army, issued to millions of men in a war that officially revolved around machine guns. For the soldiers who carried it, the K98k was not a symbol on a poster, but a five-shot bolt-action tool that had to work in mud, snow, and rubble from Poland to the Eastern Front. In this episode, we look at where the K98k came from, how it fit into German squad tactics, and what it was really like to live and fight with it on different fronts. We talk honestly about its strengths and limits, and about how a rifle built for a defeated regime went on to a long life in other armies, gun racks, and memories.
