Which Protagonist Shaped Tamriel the Most? | Elder Scrolls Lore

Heroism in Tamriel is often viewed as a scar left by destiny where unlikely prisoners are plucked from dungeons or execution blocks to fulfill divine prophecies. This analysis evaluates the three most iconic champions known as the Nerevarine, the Champion of Cyrodiil, and the Last Dragonborn to determine who stands as the continent's greatest defender. While each hero emerged to stop an extinction level event, their methods and lasting legacies vary significantly across the different eras of history. The Nerevarine is highlighted for fundamentally dismantling the religious and political structure of Morrowind by defeating the false gods of the Tribunal and stopping the Corprus plague spread by Dagoth Ur. In contrast, the Champion of Cyrodiil is noted for holding back the gates of Oblivion and eventually assuming the mantle of the Mad God, Sheogorath, though it was Martin Septim who ultimately sacrificed himself to end the crisis. The Last Dragonborn is credited with possessing the most superior raw powers among the three, having traveled to Sovngarde to defeat Alduin the World Eater. However, some argue their impact on daily life was less transformative than the Nerevarine’s total cultural and religious upheaval. Beyond the main historical trilogy, the Vestige from the Elder Scrolls Online is presented as a hero who has dealt with more threats than all other protagonists combined. The Vestige thwarted at least five different Daedric threats and countless world ending plots across the entire continent. Ultimately, while all these individuals were indispensable for the survival of Nirn, the Nerevarine is often considered the most impactful due to the sheer scale of the social and spiritual change they brought to the Dunmer people.
