H.E. Andrew Noble, the Ambassador of UK, at the end of his mandate By Izabela Corina Juncu Partner Editor Nine O’Clock The five years diplomatic mandate in our country ends for The Ambassador of the United Kingdom, His Excellency Andrew Noble. He leaves Romania today, the country where he began his career, in his first diplomatic post outside Great Britain 40 years ago. Andrew Noble first came to Romania 40 years ago, as a press attaché and returned 35 years later, in 2018, as ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. “After 5 years, a time when I was very happy to represent my country and I was happy to be in Romania. Bucharest is the city where I lived for 8 years, and I lived in London for only 4 years, I have a significant relationship with this country.” He has extensive knowledge about Romania and its evolution since the communist regime till the current democratic society. Being asked about how he sees these changes, from a diplomatic perspective and, certainly, in relation to his assignment in Romania, he responded that the Romania he lived in the 80s and the Romania of nowadays are not the same. “Beyond appearances, the buildings that are the same, the countryside that hasn't necessarily changed, everything to do with the people has changed. In the 80s, the biggest problem was that Romanians were not allowed to talk to foreigners, unless they had approval from the “Security”. And we didn't want to cause problems for ordinary Romanians by talking to them, because we knew they would have problems because of us", said H.E., the Ambassador. In a recent interview, His Excellency said that he is not ready to leave Romania just yet. As he fluently speaks Romanian and knows all the local traditions, his relationship with the country is truly special. Asked about what are the things that he will miss most about our country and why, he responded that he will miss “the sun and the very open and warm people, who want their guests to leave with a good thought”. In his interview, he also declared his love and appreciation for Romanian food and traditions. “What I will miss most of all is the Romanians, thank goodness, we have a lot in the United Kingdom and now, on a serious level, I am really worried about where I will find the supply “smântână”, because you can’t spend 5 years in Romania without becoming addicted to it. Romania is a fascinating mix of cultures. Whether you are in Bucharest, looking at the amazing belle epoque architecture, or you’re going to Art Safari to discover some of the best art exhibitions, anywhere in the Eastern Europe and all the fabulous restaurants in Bucharest with wine of the highest quality.” His Excellency expressed his appreciation for Romania’s “very efficient diplomatic system” and the satisfaction he derived from collaborating with the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Government, for the most intricate and delicate diplomatic matters. Asked to shortly describe Romanians, their strong points and the weak points, as a country, as people, His Excellency replied that in his opinion, it is necessary for young people to understand the historical realities of life under communism: "We are waiting for the big revelation, to find out what Romania thinks about itself. It's a good thing that foreigners say all these praises, I'm delighted about it, but we also need Romanians to speak well of this wonderful country.” The international climate filled with smoke is a very significant topic for him, as a diplomat and as a person, declaring his empathy towards the innocent civilians in Gaza. He believes that Israel has the rights and indeed the duty to protect its civilians and to respond to that attack, but also that the rights of the Palestinians need to be respected, remembering that Hamas does not speak for the great majority of the Palestinian civilians, anywhere in the world, and we must not confuse these two. He expressed high regard for his successor, describing him as “experienced” and a “first class interlocutor” - “Probably he will be in love with Romania within the very few months.” The most important advice that he has for him is to be cautious when considering other’s opinion. He talked about keeping the information “as a reservoir of thoughts”, while avoiding the confusion of other people’s conclusions as factual. “This is the most important thing that a diplomat can do.” The admirable mission of His Excellency Andrew Nobles as a diplomat ends today, but he is certain about his return. #nineoclocknews #romanianews #youtube #latestnews #diplomacy #linkedin #subscribenow #financialintegrity #Bursa #ministrul #speech #held #president #Romania #klausiohannis #iohannis #romanianews #diplomacy #youtube #socialmediaupdates #subscribenow #facebook #newsroundup #latestnews #financialintegrity #nineoclock #ziare #newspaper #magazines
