We stay at 2 campsites in the South Hams area of Devon. From the Plymouth Sound site we cycle down to the coast and along to Wembury Point which is National Trust owned. We take in the views along the coast, learn about the now disappeared holiday camp here and look over to The Great Mewstone. From the Start Bay site we cycle down to Torcross and Slapton Sands which is a 3 mile long pebble beach. There is a Tank memorial to commemorate the terrible tragedy of April 27th 1944 when 946 American service men were killed during Exercise Tiger, the rehearsals for the D Day landings planned for Utah beach in Normandy. On the other side of the road is Slapton Ley, the largest freshwater lake in the Southwest and a haven for a host of birds and other wildlife. We then cycle up from Torcross and look over Slapton Ley and the bay before making our way to Beesands, which is a holiday destination as well as still operating as a crab and lobster fishing village.
