Please note I am not including any graphic details of the ravens' visit - there are other videos which show the gory scenes. For my part, I do not wish to upset myself and my viewers. Please also note the last 2.5 minutes of this video are accompanied by soft instrumental music. I was expecting my future videos to be completely different in tone, as we were all on pip watch, but this teaches us that things, in nature, are unpredictable. On the morning of 11 March, Akecheta left the nest after watching something flying around (no idea what or who). This was his third time of leaving the nest unattended - on the two previous occasions, it was to go fishing. This time, the ravens were obviously close to the nest, as they arrived pretty fast, and helped themselves to the eggs, two of which contained the yet unhatched chicks. One egg was taken away whole, so impossible to say it if contained a developing eaglet. Thunder arrived a bit later, carrying a stick. She did not seem to understand at first, but soon she was checking the nest and arranging the egg cup, as if nothing had happened. I am no expert and I don't know what capabilities eagles have to assess certain situations, but I was under the impression there was some conflict between the hard evidence and the hormonal instinct to incubate etc. Some consciousness there must have been, as she left the nest a few times. Akecheta arrived, also carrying a stick, in the early afternoon and took over incubation duties, then left while Thunder was still away. In turns, they came back but with a difference - Thunder was still performing parental duties, Akecheta just stood on the rock. Thunder spent the night at the nest, laying on the egg cup. Akecheta has just or is about to turn 5, i.e. become an adult. His hatching day is not known as there is no camera at the nest he came from (Los Pinos, formerly known as Smugglers' Cove, Santa Cruz Island), but he was first seen as a nestling on 19 March 2016. Thunder will be 12 at the end of March and was born on this island (Santa Catalina). Her parents, Chase and Cholyn, live only 6 miles away, at Two Harbors. They have been together for 18 years now, I believe, and they have two eggs in their nest, laid on 28 February and 3 March respectively. ** NEW INFORMATION ADDED ON 13 MARCH** I now know, thanks to a video of experienced movie maker Cali Condor, that it was Thunder flying by when Akecheta left the nest - he must have misunderstood her intentions and thought she was flying to the nest to take incubation over. I failed spotting her when looking at the live stream. I wish to thank Mary B for pointing this video out to me. Please note the West End Overlook Cam is currently non operational - the new camera requires wiring, which would take a number of hours to instal, and this would disturb the eagles.
