Henry Threadgill has had a long and productive career as a composer and alto saxophonist. This is an audience recording of his Sextet in 1984, his first group after Air split up. The group recorded several albums before Threadgill moved on to the next of his many projects over the past 4 decades. I remember buying Just the Facts and Pass the Bucket and thinking it was pretty exciting and provocative music, in particular "Gateway," a piece the group performs on this recording. This recording is from a fellow taper that I traded with and saw at shows in the mid-80s, Rich Williams. Anyone who knows the history of late 20th century NYC will recall that the Bronx (like the Lower East Side and Alphabet City) was a pretty burned out and at times dangerous place, but when great music called, it was hard to resist. I remember going to shows there with some trepidation.
